The theme of Earth Day 2023 is “Invest in our Planet”. At Interface we are helping the façade industry to tackle the climate crisis by investing in innovative design tools to measure and reduce the embodied carbon in building facades.
Recognising the need for a robust way to calculate the embodied carbon in façade systems, Interface developed an innovative tool that uses architects’ drawings to measure the environmental implications of façade options at an early stage.
The tool presents options for each facade type and can include different carbon density options for the same material (eg, a recycled option) or different volumes (eg, timber mullions instead of aluminium).
Results can be compared to determine which facade performs best from an environmental perspective, allowing clients to choose more sustainable design solutions at the point when decisions about materials are being made.
Embodied carbon assessment relies on the quality of information provided by suppliers. Everyone in the construction industry must focus their efforts on releasing the most accurate environmental data so that carbon analysis can be as rigorous as possible.
